About NMIH
As a Smithsonian Institution affiliate, the museum showcases a world class collection. The 18,000-square-foot museum houses multiple galleries that present compelling stories of American industry. NMIH's exhibit highlights include our acclaimed Smithsonian 1876 Centennial artifacts, a wealth of Bethlehem Steel artifacts and archival materials, the Scalamandre textile machinery collection, and industrial archival materials, photos, letters and documents.
Museum visitors see more than 200 unique artifacts — whether it is the first made, the oldest-surviving, longest-operating, or last-produced — including 23 Smithsonian industrial machines from the Centennial era, a 115-ton Corliss steam engine, a Scalamandre "White House" loom, a 20-foot tall Nasmyth steam hammer, and the first piece of steel rolled at the Bethlehem Iron Company.
