Join us for a FREE oyster tasting and panelist discussion about sustainable seafood!Wednesday, March 22nd @6PMSeafood is an integral part of coastal living and has been for centuries. However, the question of how our seafood impacts our environment and our economy is increasingly important as we see more and more aquaculture project proposals popping up in Maine and around the country.
Everyone can agree that sustainable seafood sources are the best way to ensure that generations to come can continue to use our ocean to thrive and survive. Industrial-scale finfish farming poses a threat to this future. In these massive operations, thousands of finned fish like salmon or yellowtail are raised in pens or cages out at sea. Chemicals used to keep disease out of the cramped cages, along with fish waste and excess feed, flow directly into surrounding waters.
To make matters worse, offshore finfish farming facilities are managed by large corporations that exploit a shared, public resource for profits while undermining the work of local fishermen and aquaculturists. Instead of letting in polluting outside companies, we need to invest in our local community seafood producers, and that’s what we are highlighting at the panel discussion on March 22nd.
Join us for a free tasting of locally-sourced oysters as we elevate an example of what our seafood system could and should look like here in Maine! We will also be facilitating a panel discussion about sustainable seafood in the Maine community–so come to learn more and ask questions about the dangers of offshore finfish farming and the more sustainable and local aquaculture alternatives!
