Local Black families experience disparities in wealth, health, education, and more. Where does it all begin? At birth. In Allegheny County, Black babies are 5 times more likely than white babies to die in the year following birth. The Black Birth Expo is just one way Healthy Start and other maternal and child health organizations are working to connect Black families to culturally relevant birthing and parenthood resources. About your host, Healthy Start! The mission of Healthy Start, Inc. Pittsburgh is to improve maternal and child health and to reduce poor birth outcomes and infant mortality in Allegheny County. Since 1991, they’ve offered free, community-based programs to families—especially Black families—during the perinatal period. Healthy Start supports healthier pregnancies, safer births, stronger families, and a more equitable healthcare system.
