Description
Join us for this fun and hands-on workshop where participants will learn the ins and outs of propagating California native plants from cuttings! Topics covered include: - How to collect and prepare plant material for cuttings, including local Sages (Salvias) and Manzanitas (Arctostaphylos), Currants (Ribes) and more - Correct soils and watering techniques for cuttings - How to properly transplant rooted cuttings - Soils and fertilizers to use on young, rooted cuttings After a brief tour of the Ranch Sierra Vista nursery growing grounds and propagation house, attendees will be shown the basics of plant propagation from cuttings. Participants will get the opportunity to help prepare and stick fresh cuttings, along with the chance to transplant rooted cuttings into larger containers. Participants may take some of the plant material home with them to grow out for themselves, and all other plant material worked on during this training will be grown-out for current and future native plant restoration projects in and around the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. This morning event will take place outdoors at the Rancho Sierra Vista nursery. Much of the class will take place under shade, but attendees should be prepared to stand all 2 hours and be exposed to the morning cold and sun for various lengths of time. Please wear hiking or outdoor working attire, bring water/reusable water bottle, sunscreen, and a sun hat. Directions: On Google Maps, search 'Car Park for Sycamore Canyon, Newbury Park' and follow those directions to the final, bottom main parking lot. Park in the main visitor parking lot at Rancho Sierra Vista, and walk past the left side of the bathrooms, past the Eucalytpus grove. Walk into and past the horse stable area, and into the nursery. Average walking time from the main visitor parking lot to the nursery is less than 3 minutes. If you are walking for more than 3 minutes, you may be lost! Please call (805) 844-7449 for help if you are lost.
