Description

Through most of the 20th century Stockton, California was home to the largest community of Filipinos outside the Philippines. Because thousands of Filipinos worked in San Joaquin County and the nearby Delta, Stockton because the crossroads of Filipino America. A six-block area in downtown Stockton known as Little Manila, became the heart and soul of a vibrant ethnic community. This symposium will touch on how Filipino Americans and their decedents shaped the history, culture and economy of Stockton and San Joaquin County. A video of oral interviews conducted with 11 local Filipinos in their late 80s and 90s will be featured. To hear from those who lived and experienced first-hand Little Manila and early Stockton will provide insight into what it was like to be Filipino American in the early years. You will hear from presenters who will provide historical background of how Stockton became the destination for Filipino Americans. Presenters will also share different aspects of Filipino American experience such as Pinoy Boxing, Taxi Dancers and Student Activism. There is much more to the history of Filipinos in Stockton that can be learned and covered in these few hours. It is our hope that this symposium will be a step in building visibility, understanding, a sense of identity and pride in Stockton’s rich Filipino American history. A reception will follow the presentations. Appetizers and refreshments will be available. There will be informational tables sponsored by our local community partners. Also, enjoy performances by TOP FIVE hip hop group, San Joaquin Delta College EPIC Dance Team and KAPWA of Edison High School. This symposium is open to all. We encourage you to come, bring your families and friends. The event is free of charge.
