The Middle Ages, as they are often called, spanned a thousand years of European history. This period through the "Dark Ages" began about 450 years ago. All levels of society were strongly influenced by the Roman Catholic Church. Just as Catholicism ruled the hearts and minds of the Middle Ages, so it dominated musical life. Most important musicians were ministers and worked for the church. One of the most important professions in thousands of churches is liturgical singing. Because of this importance of the church, it is not surprising that only religious music has been recorded for centuries.
