This is a hymn sung in the formal liturgy of the Roman Catholic Church, which originated in the medieval Roman Catholic Church. One Pope of the time, Gregorius Magnus (who served from 590 to 604 AD), compiled these hymns into a volume, so they became known as the "Gringorian hymns."
Gregorian Chant has the following characteristics: the lyrics are all Latin, it is a single melody line without accompaniment and harmony, the rhythm is very free, it adopts the mode scale different from the "major and minor system", and it also has the objective, impersonal and extra-secular nature. This kind of hymnal music is inseparable from the liturgy and can be considered "functional music," meaning music with a specific function and no entertainment value. They are mainly intended to express the religious connotations of the lyrics, rather than focusing on functional beauty or emotional appeal. Interestingly, many medieval folk music and ballads were adapted from Gregorian chants.
