Description
Renowned as an innovator and an icon within the field of fashion, this haute couture designer is preparing for an exceptional upcoming runway show in Milan, Italy. Her Four Seasons of Fashions preview whets the appetite for an extraordinary world debut in Milan this fall. This is without a doubt, her most powerful and exquisite collection. It puts her squarely on the global stage with the world’s finest design talents. These designs bring her lifetime goals to fruition. At age 4, Beulah watched the Eastern Star sewing circle visit her home in Philadelphia, Mississippi, where they joined her mother in arranging quilts over wooden horses and then stitching and filling them with cotton. When the others were not there, her mother sewed for the family using paper bags and newspaper pages for patterns, and department store catalogs for inspiration. From that humble start, a prodigy has blossomed into a sought-after fashion designer and a master of translating colors, fabrics, trends and passion into bold and majestic creations. Her works were hailed by promoters and fans of the former Ebony Fashion Fair Traveling Show, as well as various exhibits and shows throughout the country including the Smithsonian Center of Folklife and Cultural Heritage in 2014. In 2018-2019, she participated in the “Oh You Fancy” exhibit at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American. In 2020, Cooley’s work appeared in the Cornell University Black Excellence, “Fashion that Prevails” exhibit. From the ability to illustrate her concepts, calculate the embellishments and craft her own patterns to producing amazing customized finished pieces, her talents extend beyond those of casual designers. “It’s what I do, What I have always done,” Cooley says. “All because, I wanted to create something unique for myself and boost that uniqueness and confidence in others through fashion.” Her success, Cooley says, was long buoyed by support from her late husband, Curtis, who without his commitment, she could not have persevered. Also, she credits her three children and customers for their support. “This is the opportunity I didn’t know existed as a child growing up in Mississippi, where the options for girls were to be a nurse, a teacher or the wife of a teacher. Maybe it’s my chance to take a step out on the red carpet and have people all around the world be able to purchase Beulah Cooley designs in Milan, Paris or wherever,” she says.
