Description

Nova Law Review proudly presents the 2023 Symposium: Advancing Advocacy–-a symposium with a broad range of topics encompassing conventional and “unconventional” forms of advocacy, as well as the limitations thereto. A goal of the 2023 Nova Law Review Symposium: Advancing Advocacy, and the Symposium Book accompanying it, is to delve into the past, present, and future of advocacy as it applies to the legal profession. Legal advocacy in America is underpinned by English common law, the American adversarial approach to client representation, and the ever-evolving ethical principles within the American Bar Association Model Rules of Professional Conduct. At the Symposium, attendees will hear from judges, attorneys, mediators, practitioners, law professors, and legal scholars. Attendees will learn about effective litigation skills, ADR strategies that will augment effective client representation, tactics for balancing zealous advocacy with professionalism, strategies for staying abreast of ethical rules in the modern age of technology, and a new Policy Advocacy Model to foster attorneys’ success in policy-related efforts. It is truly an honor for Nova Law Review to host this Symposium about a topic so integral to NSU Law’s spirit. In 2024, the Shepard Broad College of Law will celebrate its 50th Anniversary. From its very beginning, NSU Law has incubated and promoted a courageous willingness to dive into an uncertain yet promising future. Since the law school’s founding, the dedicated efforts of faculty, students, alumni, and members of the community led to the creation of an advocacy program now ranked in the top twenty percent of American Bar Association (ABA) accredited law schools. The law school’s two advocacy organizations, the NSU National Trial Association and the NSU Moot Court Honor Society, regularly compete and excel nationally. In the 2022-2023 academic year, these organizations won both national and regional titles. Much like the present, the future of NSU Law and the advocates it fosters remains bright and promising. A complimentary breakfast, refreshments, and lunch will be provided. Confirmed Panelists include: The Honorable Lorena Mastrarrigo, Seventeenth Judicial Circuit of Florida The Honorable Mindy Kirsch Brown, Broward County Court of Florida The Honorable Robert F. Diaz, Seventeenth Judicial Circuit of Florida Shari Elessar, Florida and New York Bar member and founder of Back on Track Mediation Karen Evans, Florida Bar member and founder of Litigation Resolution, Inc.
