Description

At a time when schools and legislatures debate restrictions on teaching material covering troubling episodes from our nation’s past, a panel discussion examines what it is about our collective history that makes us want to close our eyes and ears. Panel speakers include James H. Madison, Ph.D., emeritus professor of history at Indiana University; Erica Buchanan-Rivera, Ph.D., chief equity and inclusion officer at the Metropolitan School District of Washington Township in Marion County; Corey Pettigrew, assistant principal and director of diversity and inclusion at Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School in Indianapolis; Will Kaiser, senior at North Central High School in Indianapolis; and Kennedy Hogue, junior at Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School in Indianapolis. Eunice Trotter, director of Indiana Landmarks’ Black Heritage Preservation Program, and Phil Bremen, associate professor emeritus in the Department of Media at Ball State University, serve as moderators. Sponsored by Indiana Landmarks’ Black Heritage Preservation Program, the Indiana Remembrance Coalition at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, and the Social Justice and Racial Reconciliation Working Group at Trinity Episcopal Church, both in Indianapolis.
