Description

Uncovering great, overlooked songs in exquisite three-part harmony -- Meet the performers of BACKYARD BIRDS: Backyard Birds performs a fresh blend of great, overlooked songs in a wide variety of genres, uncovering great, overlooked songs in genres, ranging from Americana, classic country, pop and R&B to a sprinkling of jazz standards and originals. The group is known for the three women's close-knit harmonies (Linda Baker, vocals and acoustic electric guitar; Jean Catino, vocals and tenor ukulele; and June Coha, vocals and soprano ukulele), Linc Russin 's cool mandolin playing, and Larry Prather 's expressive bass lines, as well as their delightfully surprising choices of eclectic and little-known material. Backyard Birds’ 2020 album, Wildlife, showcases the band's approach to obscure but cover-worthy songs, with music from folk duo First Aid Kit, songwriter and singer Carlene Carter, roots and Americana icons Buddy and Julie Miller, rockabilly/soul songwriter Imelda May, classic country songwriters Ray Edenton and Don Winters, and Neil Young. Backyard Birds’ intimate live performances also often include songs by Anna McGarrigle, Rosanne Cash, Sam Phillips, Dan Penn and Chips Moman, the Beatles, the Avett Brothers, Wayne Thompson, Shelby Lynne, Paul Simon, Leonard Cohen, Sting, Dave Frishberg and others. “Gorgeous folksy renditions...The harmonies have only gotten better...a local treat.” Aaron Carnes, Good Times (Santa Cruz, CA) “A collection of songs that make your heart sway, and voices that find that sweet spot, and keep you dancing in your dreams.” Christina Wise, Press Banner (Scotts Valley, CA) The five musicians met and began to develop their sound through the vibrant, supportive Santa Cruz ukulele scene. Baker and Catino first sang and performed together and with Russin at Santa Cruz play-alongs and open mics. When Coha was invited to play at a local gig, she asked Baker and Catino to join her as Backyard Birds. Russin, who learned mandolin as a boy in Italy, and Prather, a devoted student of music who had been in other local bands, joined shortly afterwards, and completed the Backyard Birds quintet in 2017. Since then, the Birds have performed throughout Santa Cruz County, at Michael’s on Main, Felton Music Hall, Chaminade Resort and Spa, the Aromas Grange (in April 2022), Davenport Roadhouse, The Food Lounge, and Bocci’s Cellar, among other venues.
