Description

Did you know that the Fort Missoula area hosts one of the largest migratory waterfowl migration stops in the Missoula valley? The Fort Missoula Ponds complex is an exceptional biodiversity hotspot that attracts over 30 species of ducks, geese, and swans during migration, as well as an impressive variety of loons, grebes, cormorants, and even shorebirds. This spring, join Learning with Meaning, the Montana Natural History Center, Clark Fork Coalition, and Five Valley Audubon for a series of migration watch birding events highlighting the importance of this portion of the Bitterroot River corridor. Join us on Thursday afternoons March 30, April 13, April 27, and May 10 from 3:30m-4:30 pm. Spotting scopes, binoculars, and field guides will be provided, but feel free to bring your birding gear! We will observe the ponds from the Learning with Meaning property (2801 40th Ave.), which provides an excellent vantage point immediately adjacent to the west side of the ponds and access to the forest, grassland, and wetland habitats of MacCauly Butte. Expert birders from Montana Natural History Center, Five Valley Audobon, and the University of Montana will help guide visitors' birding experience through this fantastic area.
