The Northern Nevada International Center will hold its 23rd Annual Global Gala: A View of our World on April 27, 2023, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Atlantis Casino Resort Spa.The Global Gala is a fun and engaging evening that celebrates the three pillars of NNIC services creating a global experience: international exchanges, refugee resettlement, and the Language Bank. To highlight a few important updates on NNIC’s work this year, please see the information below on how we tackled the post-COVID return to exchanges and refugee resettlement. We couldn’t have done this without the amazing work of our staff and board and, of course, the ongoing community collaboration and partnership: We were back to hosting international visitors, totaling 365 participants from 156 countries on 31 projects!We resettled 222 refugees, asylees, victims of trafficking, etc. from Afghanistan, Congo, Syria, Ukraine, Haiti, Cuba, El Salvador and HondurasWe added the largest grant in NNIC history to host military students in honor of the late Senator John McCain effective 2023-25We added two new embassy projects, one with the U.S. embassy in Manila and one at the U.S. embassy in SeoulWe hired 30 new staff members, mostly to the resettlement team!We added a second location for the exchanges team, have just signed a lease on a third location which will allow exchanges staff members to work close to UNR where their programs are But it’s not the big highlights that keep us most grounded and steadfast to our objective to improve the human condition. It’s stories like the one we received from a European student who participated in the SUSI program and felt that Reno was the very best place to visit and study.It’s going to the hospital and greeting a new American baby who will have a better chance for opportunity, education and peaceIt’s dancing with families at World Refugee DayIt’s seeing our amazing volunteers come in every Thursday for food deliveries to our most vulnerable clientsIt’s going to a naturalization ceremony on a monthly basis and see the faces of refugees who are now new AmericansIt’s our partnerships and collaborations, highlighted in last Saturday’s story about Life Church’s generous donation of $75,000 for our Afghan clients to purchase vehicles.
