Stephanie Klick, chair of the House Committee on Public Health, is a veteran nurse practitioner with more than 40 years of experience. She graduated Texas Christian University with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and began her career at the North Hills Medical Center in North Richland Hills. Under her leadership, the Committee on Public Health released a detailed report that included a study of fentanyl overdoses and deaths in Texas. About the fentanyl crisis: Fentanyl, a powerful synthetic opioid, is among the most common and dangerous street drugs in the US. Overdoses involving fentanyl are now the leading cause of unintentional deaths for adults ages 18-45. In many cases, the drug is made to look like other pharmaceuticals such Percocet, OxyContin, and Xanax. The need for awareness and education about fentanyl, especially among young people, continues to deepen. Earlier this month, a man and woman accused of selling fentanyl to teenagers were charged in connection with the deaths of three North Texas students and hospitalizations of six more.
