Description

Pruning is an essential skill for managing trees and shrubs in your garden or site design. In this workshop, you'll gain practice with general pruning tools, skills, and considerations. Plants can be pruned for a variety of purposes, each of which will uniquely inform your choices. We'll meet a number of plants with different forms and growth habits, and explore what different cuts might result from specific goals, including: plant healthshade managementsize managementfruit (or leaf) pruductionwood harvestharvest of medicinal, craft, or other materialpropagationParticipants will learn how to identify dead wood, injury and infection, branch crosses, buds, leaf scars, and annual growth; and when to use techniques such as coppicing, pollarding, topping, thinning, and root pruning. We'll provide tools, but please feel free to bring your own favorite pruning tools to share knowledge and experience with different brands and styles! Completion of this workshop will qualify you to help us prune - and take home cuttings - at our March 18 Volunteer Day, when we'll be pruning species for propagation, including fig, variegated willow, and elder.
