Description

Dr. Mullen’s talk is titled after his latest book in which he advocates for those trapped in the confusion and captivity that mark abusive situations. We are both thrilled and sobered that Dr. Mullen will spend an evening with us. Unfortunately, most of us have either experienced abusive behavior from a person who ought to have done better, or we know someone who has. Similar to our past forums on brain plasticity and the roots of addiction, we imagine this gathering will affect its participants in profound ways. Come with your questions. Bring a friend. Let’s tread tenderly. Wade served ten years in pastoral ministry and five years as a seminary Master of Divinity program director and assistant professor before transitioning to full-time research and writing. He earned a PhD in Leadership Studies and is working on his second book. He's the Founder of Pellucid Consulting which provides consulting and independent assessment services for institutions. His Substack newsletter called Pellucid launched in the Fall of 2021 where he writes about the ways in which deception is used to abuse and cover-up abuse and how leaders and institutions can act with integrity and speak truthfully. Mullen speak on occasion at events related to the subject of abuse and institutional response and participate as a guest on podcasts. He continues to engage in research efforts to better understand abuse within Christian cultures and institutions and serves as an institutional response specialist with GRACE, assisting them primarily with institutional assessments. He lives in Lancaster County with his wife Sarita and four children. In Dr. Mullen’s own words It was my work in the local church that first introduced me to the needs of abuse victims and the potential for institutional betrayal and trauma when those who are supposed to protect the victim(s) choose to protect the abuser(s). I also learned the challenge of advocating from within and how to confront the system when necessary.
