Description

This year’s Quality of Place Conference will cover how to organize and manage a neighborhood Community Development Corporation and Historic Preservation Commission. There will be three presentations. Brittany Miller, the Director of the Eastern Regional Office of Indiana Landmarks will introduce the topics of discussion. She will explain the importance of a CDC and Historic Preservation Commission, and why preservation is a viable economic development tool. The second speaker is Paul Smith of Indianapolis and former head of the Southeast Indianapolis Community Development Corporation. He will lead a panel to discuss how neighborhoods can have an impact on their development in a way that preserves the architectural heritage of a community. The third speaker is William Schmickle is from Annapolis, Maryland who is a noted authority and author on local historic preservation commissions. He will lead a workshop on commissions (free and open to the public) and how they play a vital role in insuring appropriate design, rehabilitation, and development within designated historic areas. In addition to the conference agenda there will be opportunities to meet the speakers. It has been arranged for Mr. Schmickle to meet with the Richmond Historic Preservation Committee at their monthly meeting the night before the conference. He will introduce himself and have a dialogue with commission members and staff about their work and goals. On the morning of the conference our partner, the Wayne County, Indiana Foundation is hosting a breakfast for civic leaders to personally meet the speakers who will conduct an intimate presentation on the topics to be discussed at the conference. The breakfast has become a regular event during the conference. It has proved to be fruitful in helping engage folks on issues related to preservation and reinvestment. New ideas will be planted in the minds of the attendees leading to further discussion after the conference. We plan to schedule meetings with individuals working in city government, economic development, banking, and real estate. Mr. Schmickle has offered as much time available to talk with those who would have an impact on the success of a comprehensive program of historic preservation. It should be a well-rounded effort.
