Meet Dr. Nathaniel Bryan, a passionate and innovative scholar of early childhood education. Dr. Bryan is an associate professor at Miami University, where he teaches and researches about the experiences and needs of Black boys and Black male teachers in early childhood classrooms. He explores how their identities and pedagogies are shaped by social and cultural factors, and how they can be empowered by critical literacy and play. He also examines how to prepare urban early childhood educators to create more inclusive and responsive learning environments for Black boys. Dr. Bryan is the author of a groundbreaking book called Toward a BlackboyCrit Pedagogy: Black boys, male teachers, and early childhood classroom practices. In this book, he introduces a new theoretical framework that challenges the dominant narratives about Black boys and offers new possibilities for their education. He is also the recipient of the 2020 Emerging Scholar Award from the American Educational Association’s Special Interest Group––Critical Perspectives on Early Childhood Education. Dr. Bryan is a visionary leader who inspires others with his dedication and expertise.
