Nationally notable women and local leaders have been part of Long Island’s history, though nearly invisible in most accounts. Authors and artists, unksquaws and suffragists, pioneering pilots and the Janes who made the planes, and innumerable other women have all left their mark on Long Island’s past. Even “ordinary” women have played important roles throughout our history. An overview of Long Island women’s roles in Native American Algonquian culture, colonial settlements, the Revolution, art, aviation, civic and other activities. The talk, based on her book Women in Long Island’s Past: A History of Eminent Ladies and Everyday Lives, includes women with national reputation and others who are important locally. Oyster Bay women include Mary Cooper, Sally Townsend, and Ethel Roosevelt Derby.
