Instructor Name and Credentials: Dr. Kerri Kane graduated from William James College in August 2022 with a doctorate in Clinical Psychology and a concentration in Forensics. She recently completed her APA-accredited internship at the Federal Bureau of Prisons Metropolitan Detention Center in Los Angeles and now is a unit psychologist here at Bridgewater State Hospital. Her clinical interests include working with forensically-involved individuals who present with symptoms of major mental health diagnoses and histories of developmental trauma. About the Session: Program will explore the current and relevant literature related to complex and developmental trauma experiences among individuals who engage in future acts of violence. The presentation will provide clinical context related to how individuals with significant histories of complex and developmental trauma may later be diagnosed with personality disorders as adults, and how these diagnoses impact treatment planning and external perspectives. Lastly, this presentation will discuss how the understanding the implications of complex trauma across critical developmental periods is essential to the patient population served at Bridgewater State Hospital and similar clinical or correctional settings. Learning Objectives: 1. Discuss the conceptualization of developmental/complex trauma and how it differs from the current diagnostic standard of PTSD 2. Explain how the experiences of developmental trauma contribute to risk of future violence and the diagnostic conceptualization of personality/characterological pathology 3. Identify and describe at least one evidence-based trauma-informed treatment, including the benefits and limitations
