Description
Nationally, one in every seven people who give birth will experience a perinatal mood or anxiety disorder (PMAD), and in the state of California, one in every four will experience perinatal depression. since the pandemic began, those rates have increased significantly, estimated to have now reached on in every three. Of those who experience symptoms of perinatal depression, only half of them are ever identified and addressed or provided mental health care. Many mental health clinicians have limited training and experience working with perinatal mood disorders. Clinicians and those working pregnant and new moms need specialized training, tools, and resources to learn about supporting mental health needs related to pregnant and childbirth. This training will enhance clinicians' ability to deliver mental health services to the birthing community and the ability to engage in prevention and early intervention, which can have a positive, long-term impact on the child and family's overall health and wellbeing. This two day, no-cost, in person training is designed to educate and prepare participants by introducing them to the identification, screening, and assessment of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs). Training facilitators from Maternal Mental Health Now will address common symptoms of prenatal and postpartum depression and anxiety as well as the impact theses symptoms can have on parents, their overall functioning, and their relationship with their baby. Day one is designed to educate community service providers such as WIC staff, home visitors, medical office staff and other affiliated professionals along with mental health clinicians who serve pregnant and postpartum birthing families. Participants will leave the training with increased knowledge on how to support at-risk families with infants and young children as well as the ability to recognize when a caregiver should be referred for further assessment and additional mental health support. Though the use of vignettes, personal stories and interactive discussion and activities, participants will learn to integrate material shared into their day-to-day practice with families to support their transition into parenthood and improve their ability to access appropriate and timely resources. Day one attendance is mandatory in order to attend day two. DAY ONE LEARNING OBJECTIVES CAN BE ACCESSED HERE. The objective is to strengthen clinical provider knowledge and ability to discern when a caregiver's symptoms require immediate care, and how to obtain an accurate diagnosis of their perinatal mood disorder. Approaches to wellness planning, referral, and evidence-based intervention will also be explored in addition to how to start conversations about mental health with perinatal clients with cultural humility and trauma-informed care.
