Volunteer Event: Callahan Park Spring Clean Up

Other

3356 East Ferry Street,Detroit MI 48211

02 April, 2023

Description

We will be cleaning up the park, removing invasive plants, picking up trash and clearing sidewalks. We will have plenty of supplies but please bring your own work gloves, trowels, shovels, and wheelbarrows if possible. Callahan Park is part of the Detroit Bird City project to restore native bird and pollinator habitat in disused Detroit City parks. Before restoration Callahan was indistinguishable from a vacant lot with overgrown grass and plenty of trash. In 2019 we planted the two acre park with 39 different kinds of native flowers and 6 varieties of native grasses. In 2022 the park bloomed beautifully and we added another two acres of wildflower meadow to Callahan Park! Since the meadow has bloomed, several bird species have been spotted there, including the Indigo Bunting, American Goldfinch, Grey Catbird, native sparrows and Ring-necked Pheasants. Many Monarch butterflies have been observed at the site as well. We ask that if you have been exposed to anyone with Covid-19 or are feeling unwell to please stay home. ***After registering, you will receive Detroit Audubon's bi-monthly e-newsletter, Flyway Express. You may unsubscribe at any time. ***
