WEEK 7 Intermediate Sparkle Dun Flies: Hendrickson Sparkle Dun. Designed for calm water and heavy hatches, the Sparkle Dun Dry Fly helps fool even the pickiest of trout. Created by Craig Matthews in the 1980s, the Sparkle Dun takes some similarities from the famous Comparadun, but, with its tail of Antron or Z-lon, allows you to fish this fly when bugs are emerging, and trout are looking right in the surface film. The Sparkle Dun Dry Fly sits flush in the water, just like the naturals, and its tail closely resembles the nymphal shuck that mayflies emerge from, making it a great choice whenever you’re in the middle of a hatch. The Sparkle Dun comes in a variety of colors and sizes and can be adapted to suit most mayfly hatches, so choosing the right size and color is dependent on the time of year and where you’re fishing, but it’s a popular choice for small BWOs. While the Sparkle Dun excels at imitating newly emerged mayflies, it’s a fly that doesn’t have the best floatability and should be kept out of those rushing riffles, but you’ll have a tough time beating it on those glassy pools with trout sipping everywhere.
