Description

This event will be held in the Curtis Long Memorial House (245 N. Main Street) at the Person County Museum of History. Guests will be treated to classic tea refreshments, floral arrangements by the Roxboro Garden Study Club and access to a pop-up gift shop featuring locally made items. Tea will be served by members of the Thomas Person Chapter of the DAR. Following the tea, Dr. Sylvia Hoffert, professor emeritus in American History and Women’s History from UNC-Chapel Hill and Texas A&M University will cover the history of the suffrage movement from its origin to the eventual passage of the 19th amendment giving women the right to vote in the United States. She will also discuss how North Carolina and this region felt about the potential amendment and how its passage impacted women of color. Dr. Hoffert is the author of numerous books, including a biography of suffrage movement patron Alva Vanderbilt Belmont and When Hens Crow about the women’s rights movement in antebellum America. Proceeds from this event benefit the operation and programming at the museum. Tickets are required.
