Description

Do you have research or an idea for a book that you believe that will make the world a better place—and create new opportunities for you as a writer, teacher, or speaker? A trade book can help accomplish these goals, but many academics or experts struggle to translate their expertise into accessible prose that can draw in new readers outside of their specialties. In the Trade Book Institute, participants will be introduced to strategies that will help them plan and submit books to the publishers that can expand the audiences for their work. Over the course of a single day at a gorgeous retreat location in central Massachusetts, participants will gather for interactive presentations conducted by the institute facilitators, have dedicated writing time on the retreat grounds to develop a trade book proposal, and receive individual feedback and productivity coaching on their work on progress. The May 2023 Institute will be limited to twelve participants. It will take place from 9:30 am-5:00 pm at the Barred Owl Retreat in Worcester, Massachusetts on Friday, May 19th. You will be guided through the day by facilitators James M. Lang and Christine Tulley. James M. Lang is the author of multiple trade books, most recently Distracted: Why Students Can’t Focus and What You Can Do About It (Basic Books) and Small Teaching: Everyday Lessons from the Science of Learning (Wiley). He founded and now co-edits a book series on teaching for West Virginia University Press. His sessions and feedback will be drawn from his forthcoming book Writing Like a Teacher: Expanding the Audiences for Your Nonfiction Writing (University of Chicago Press, 2024). Christine Tulley’s contributions to the day will come from her research and coaching practice on writing productivity drawn from her work in How Writing Faculty Write (Utah State University Press, 2018) and new time use research from the forthcoming Rhet Comp Moms; What 100 Time Use Diaries Teach Us about Parenting, Productivity, and Professionalism. She is a professor of English at the University of Findlay and Founder and Director of Findlay’s Master of Arts in Rhetoric and Writing. She serves as President of Defend, Publish, and Lead, a boutique coaching agency that helps academics develop and sustain productive writing habits. Her research focuses on faculty writing and productivity, and she has helped dozens of academic writers achieve their writing goals through her individual coaching. Your registration fee will cover all sessions, an individual editing and coaching session with Jim and Christine, lunch and snacks, and access to the retreat grounds throughout the day. In addition, all participants will have a follow up Zoom session with Jim and Christine to check on proposal progress. There are a limited number of private rooms for rental at the retreat house for those who would like to stay overnight after or before the Institute; use the Contact the Organization button or email [email protected] to inquire about availability or to ask additional questions about the retreat.
