Description

Join us to celebrate the 209th birthday of the world-famous Ukrainian poet, Taras Shevchenko! Shevchenko’s poetry is like an eternal song of Ukrainian culture, and every Ukrainian knows his works by heart. From a Russian slave in 19th century Russian Empire, he grew up to be a writer, artist, public and political figure, folklorist, and ethnographer. Along with Shevchenko, we will bring poems of other famous Ukrainian poets that helped Ukrainian culture persevere through numerous Russian decrees for prohibition of language and the destruction of literary works. Their art portrays the unwavering Ukrainian spirit, urging them to be “eternal revolutionaries” and “laugh through tears, singing songs amidst the misery and ruin”. From the medieval kingdom of Kievan Rus’, through the blooming 19th-century scene of Ukrainian poetry and to works about the revolution of 2014 and the war in 2022. We will read and talk about the historical context of the works of: Taras ShevchenkoLesya UkrainkaIvan FrankoVasyl StusSerhiy ZhadanYuriy Izdryk
