The Center for Racial Justice welcomes the community to our Black History Month event Monday night March 6th at 6:00 pm in PSB 115 (George’s Auditorium). The title of the event is "The Riches of Freedom and The Security of Justice: The Impact of African American Financial Institutions Towards Economic Justice".
As we close out Black History Month, the annual celebration of achievements made by Black Americans, and a time to reflect on the central roles of Black Americans in US history. Since 1976, the celebration of Black History Month has honored the contributions and sacrifices of Black Americans in the United States every February. Today, Black History Month garners support and important dialog throughout the country as people of all ethnic and social backgrounds discuss the Black Experience.
Carter G. Woodson, known as the "Father of Black History," was instrumental in the establishment of having this time set aside to reflect upon and recognize the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in the fabric of American history. He is quoted as saying, "If a race has no history, it has no worthwhile tradition, it becomes a negligible factor in the thought of the world, and it stands in danger of being exterminated."
The US theme for 2023 is "Black Resistance," which presents a call to everyone to study the history of Black Americans' responses to establish safe spaces where Black life can be sustained, fortified, and respected.
