From time immemorial, Indigenous Nations utilized seasnal bountiful natural flora and fauna along the American River to sustain Miwok, Niesanan and others in a peaceful coexitence. In 1844, Honorable William Alexander Leidesdorff, Jr. acquired a 35,521 acre Mexican Land Grant wih a singular stipulation not to disturb the native communities. He established flourishing Agriculture industries, providing fresh meats, fruits, vegetables along tallow and hides.
Beginning with the January 1848 Sutter Mill, Coloma discovery of gold, the world rushed in. By 1854 the Gold Mining Towns of Negro Hill, Mormon Island and Negro Bar anchored the Gold Mining District, the authentic history in under new interpretation, at Black Miners Bar California State Park.
Fast forward to 1944 US Congressional authorization and the construction of Folsom Dam, and the creation of Folsom Lake and Lake Natoma forever altered the natural flora and fauna of the region best seen by the "rock tailings" that remains a serious challenge to the region.
