In December of 2022, a Diversion and Deflection Summit was sponsored by LCOI, The Lake County State's Attorney's Office, the Lake County Sheriff's Department, and the Safety & Justice Challenge. This event made it clear that to strengthen our community, we must keept the conversations going AND dive deeper. As a result, a series of topics connected to Diversion and Deflection will be held througout 2023. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) describes harm reduction as working by addressing broader health and social issues through improved policies, programs, and practices. Recognizing harm reduction as an evidenced-based approach, all residents of Lake County are invited to learn more about this response to substance use disorder. First responders, social service organizations, and members of the legal and behavioral health communities are encouraged to join with interested members of the Lake County community to exchange information and ideas regarding community based care, treatment, education, resources, and alternative pathways to incarceration.
