Local poets, Kavon Cortez Jones, Nakeysha Roberts Washington, & Portia Cobb, will help you write and perform your own poetry as we commemorate the future WaterMarker installation at Green Tech Station (4101 N. 31st St). The workshop will begin promptly at 12pm, and includes an optional opportunity to read/perform your piece to the group will follow the workshop. Let’s support creative arts in Milwaukee’s Garden Homes Neighborhood! No poetry experience needed - all ages and abilities are welcome! Lunch and writing supplies provided. WaterMarks is a public art project representing a citywide atlas of water stories with accompanying local artist projects. Later this spring, Green Tech Station will have a WaterMarker pole installed with the letter “G” on top facing N. 31st Street. The letter was chosen by community members to stand for Gather, Growth, Garden Homes, Green Infrastructure, and Grit. Once installed, the G will light up & pulse when heavy rain is expected as a way to alert neighbors of possible sewer overflows. Accompanying the WaterMarker are two 7’ African water vessel-inspired sculptures by Glenn Williams that were installed near the walking path in October 2022. The sculptures include the phrases “Water has no enemies” and “Water is an ancestor.” More information is available by visiting the link: https://www.watermarksmke.org/ Green Tech Station is an outdoor classroom and green infrastructure showcase site located at 4101 N. 31st Street in Milwaukee. NWSCDC, the City of Milwaukee, Reflo, and other partners worked together to clean up the formerly vacant brownfield site and subsequently install all different types of green infrastructure in one place, transforming the 3-acre lot into an environmental education destination for school groups and the broader community to learn about stormwater management and sustainable technologies.
