Description
IN-PERSONThe Schomburg Center’s annual Women's Jazz Festival (WJF) is celebrating 31 years of centering Black women in the field of jazz. The Women’s Jazz Festival was founded in 1992 by then Harlem resident and jazz vocalist, Melba Joyce. Year after year, the festival and its curators have brought together musicians, dancers and a melding of musical genres to deliver an exciting series of concerts featuring some of the best-known and emerging talent by women in jazz today. The 2023 festival will be held in person on March 6,13, and 20. Join us for opening night of the Women's Jazz Festival with Moods of Her, curated by drummer percussionist Shirazette Tinnin and presented by Jazzmobile, Inc. and executive producer, Robin Bell-Stevens. New York City based drummer and composer Shirazette Tinnin is the leader of Shirazette and Sonic WallPaper Fusion Band (formally known as The Shirazette Experiment) and The Blue Popped Culture Trio, in addition to frequent collaborator with a multitude of artists spanning the jazz, R&B, rock, pop and world genres. Moods of Her, using a range of expressions, applauds the work of women, queer, and non-gender conforming musicians, poets, activists, caregivers, nurturers, mothers, and more who have open closed doors for women's rights. Performing on the Schomburg stage along with Shirazette will be vocalist and saxophonist Orange Coffee, bassist Amina Scott, guitarist Alicyn Yaff, pianist Brittany Anjou, and tap dancer Maurice Chestnut. Join us on this journey of the matriarch’s herstory.
