Join us on Wednesday, March 22, 2023, at 7:00 pm when SVHS welcomes Dr. Rebecca Shapiro when she presents "Maria Edgeworth and Children's Literature " When it became an established borough in 1904 Edgeworth Borough took its name from the Edgeworth Female Seminary that was a landmark of the community since it moved and opened in the area in 1836. A distinguished school for girls, the Edgeworth Female Seminary was founded by Mary Gould Olver and named for a well-known novelist, children’s writer, and educationalist of the time, Maria Edgeworth. Though Maria Edgeworth never stepped foot in the area, her name lent itself to the naming of the school, then a social club, and eventually the borough. What was it about the author and her work that might have inspired Mary Gould Olver to name her school after her? Join SVHS as we welcome Dr. Rebecca Shapiro, a professor at the New York City College of Technology of the City University of New York, via Zoom. Her specialty is writing about eighteenth-century British literature, language, and culture, with a focus on Maria Edgeworth, the history of language, and lexicography. Dr. Shapiro will be discussing Maria Edgeworth’s didactic yet loving children’s literature and how she presents ethical, pedagogical, and parental issues in her works -- perhaps shedding light on what so moved Mary Olver to honor her with a school in her name. Join us on Wednesday, March 22, 2023, at 7:00 pm when Dr. Rebecca Shapiro will be discussing, via Zoom, Maria Edgeworth’s didactic yet loving children’s literature and how she presents ethical, pedagogical, and parental issues in her works.
