Alpha Connection Youth & Family Services presents a moderated symposium with Dr. Cornel West on mental health & trauma in the black community moderated by Sherman Garnett hosted by the University of Redlands. World renowned speaker, author, and actor Dr. Cornel West, affectionately known to many as Brother West, is the former Professor of the Practice of Public Philosophy at Harvard University and Professor Emeritus at Princeton University. Cornel West graduated Magna Cum Laude from Harvard in three years and obtained his M.A. and Ph.D. in Philosophy at Princeton. He has written 20 books and has edited 13. He is best known for his classics, Race Matters and Democracy Matters, and for his memoir, Brother West: Living and Loving Out Loud. His most recent book, Black Prophetic Fire, offers an unflinching look at nineteenth and twentieth-century African American leaders and their visionary legacies. Mr. Garnett is the past President of the California Association of Supervisors of Child Welfare and Attendance Section(CASCWA), Association of California School Administrators Student Services and Special Education Council (ACSA) a member of the executive board of the National Truancy Prevention Association (NTPA) and is currently serving in a appointed position by the California State Superintendent of Schools as a member of the California State School Attendance Review Board (SARB). Spoken word by Brian Coates. Brian Coates is a retired Associate Warden who writes books to cope with childhood trauma. Brian worked for CDCR for 22 years and spent a number of years as an Associate Warden for the state of California (CCTRP).
