Description

Keep Austin Weed, a local cannabis advocacy and event media company, is partnering with cannabis criminal justice reform nonprofit Last Prisoner Project (LPP) and legacy cannabis marketing & consulting company, DeLisioso, to host a benefit concert titled Let's Get Free on March 13th from 6-10 p.m. CT at the Far Out Lounge in South Austin. There is a suggested donation of $10 for guaranteed entrance. There will be a performance by legendary hip hop duo dead prez along with special guests. Also appearing to speak at the event are the creators of the Starz network dramedy Blindspotting, Rafael Casal and Daveed Diggs (star of Broadway's mega-hit Hamilton). "Blindspotting" a spin-off sequel of the 2018 film and uses spoken-word, verse, and dance as it journeys the story of an Oakland family through the intricacies of incarceration. The event marks the recent appointment of Mutulu Olugbala, aka M-1, of the hip hop group dead prez, to LPP’s Board of Directors, where he joins a coalition of cannabis industry leaders, executives, and activists committed to supporting LPP’s mission to free the country’s cannabis prisoners. An influential global connector recognized for his revolutionary brand of "artivism," M-1, has been a prominent figure in the political hip hop scene since dead prez's debut album (which lends its name to this event). Most notable for his vocal resistance against institutions that oppress African descendants in America, he continues to garner notoriety advocating for social justice, animal rights, and environmentalism. Speaking about his recent appointment to the LPP Board, M-1 said, "I’m proud to join the board of directors of Last Prisoner Project. I look forward to working with this progressive group of freedom fighters to liberate every last cannabis prisoner. I’ve spent the last thirty years defending justice on behalf of brothers and sisters in what I’ve termed ‘behind enemy lines’ as a cultural worker in the hip hop group dead prez. I intend to continue this work as this country realizes its terrible mistake in penalizing us for being part of the ever-growing cannabis industry. I can’t wait to break these chains!" About Last Prisoner Project: Last Prisoner Project (LPP) is a national, nonpartisan nonprofit organization dedicated to cannabis criminal justice reform. LPP aims to end America’s policy of cannabis criminalization, as well as to repair the harms of this discriminatory and counterproductive crusade. The organization accomplishes this by focusing on three key criminal justice reform initiatives: prisoner release, cannabis record clearance, and reentry support. About DeLisioso: DeLisioso is a cannabis marketing & consulting company founded by Richard DeLisi and his son, Rick. Richard received a 99 year sentence for a nonviolent cannabis charge in Florida and served 32 years behind bars before Last Prisoner Project was able to help secure his release in 2021. The war on drugs impacted the DeLisi family and continues to impact millions of families across the globe. They are dedicated to advocating for the freedom of every last person that has been persecuted by the criminalization of cannabis.
