Description

The Torah acts as the spiritual glue that binds the Jewish people together from generation to generation and from ultra-orthodox to ultra-reform denominations. During the Holocaust, despite all of its horrible atrocities, there were a few miracles which should not be forgotten. One such miracle was the survival of almost 1600 Torah scrolls which came from Czechoslovakia. These scrolls, under the auspices of the Memorial Scrolls Trust (MST), have been dispersed on permanent loan to congregations and organizations around the world, of which 1000 are in the United States. Nearly 60 years has passed since the scrolls began their journeys into the diaspora. You may be surprised to know that there are thirty-six (36) of these treasures in the states of Georgia and South Carolina. Congregation Mickve Israel, the third oldest Jewish Congregation in the United States, (and Congregation Agudath Achim), in partnership with the Memorial Scrolls Trust (MST) of London, will be hosting a “Parade of Czech Scrolls” which survived the Holocaust in Savannah, GA on April 16, 2023. There have been a series of gatherings over the years in places like New York (2019), California, Arizona, Massachusetts and London. This will be the first gathering of this type in the South and we invite you to participate in the event. We will be bringing our own MST scroll and hope a group of interested congregants will join us in participating in this moving program, which will include a procession of the scrolls and the opportunity to learn about the various other surviving Torahs that will be at the exhibition. It will be a truly powerful and memorable experience to be surrounded by dozens of Czech survivor scrolls held by their proud custodians.
