Description

Join The Jaxson crew for a Women's History Month-themed walking tour of Springfield, one of Jacksonville's most popular historic neighborhoods. Established as a mixed-use neighborhood north of Downtown Jacksonville in 1869, Springfield is home to some of the city's best examples of historic architecture in a wide variety of styles including frame vernacular, Queen Anne, Craftsman, Mediterranean Revival and Prairie School. Appropriate for Women's History Month, Springfield is home to buildings designed by Henrietta Dozier, Jacksonville's first female architect, and of the Springfield Improvement Association and Women's Club, which helped shape the face of the neighborhood and the wider city. Today, it boasts a thriving collection of women-owned small businesses and eateries. In recent years Springfield's walkable streets and attractive buildings have made it one of the hottest neighborhoods in the Urban Core, and as a result, it has seen considerable change, including new development and the pressures of gentrification and displacement. The tour will explore the iconic neighborhood's history and the trends shaping its future. The tour starts and ends outside 1748 Bakehouse. Street parking is free. Tickets are $20; kids 12 and under are free. The tour is suitable for most travelers.
