Goodwill Industries International began due to the strong Christian faith of founder Rev. Edgar J. Helms who sought a way to help the needy in his community at the Morgan Memorial Chapel in Boston, Massachusetts. During that time, Boston had a large population of hungry, homeless and people in need.
Rev. Helms, a young idealistic minister, took a burlap coffee bag and went door to door seeking donations of unwanted clothing and household goods. The plan was to have the homeless repair and sell the items. He would then use the money to help pay wages to the homeless in hopes of providing work and dignity.
Today, Goodwill Industries of East Texas is one of 156 Goodwill agencies in North America, as well as more than a dozen internationally. GIET has 15 stores and 5 additional offices, employs over 300 people, and seves 13 East Texas counties.
