Who Taught You To Hate The Texture of Your Hair? A Youth-Led Conversation

Kids

401 North Driver Street,Durham NC 27703

28 February, 2023

Description

The purpose of this townhall is to unpack the unspoken educational curriculum of Black hair culture, as seen through the eyes of four young ladies. Hair care is so much more than styling and product choices. It involves constant reflection on how hair is received by people in power, and overcoming the way societal messages about hair make us feel about ourselves. In this interactive session, attendees will engage in authentic conversations about overcoming barriers to loving their hair, and how schools can provide opportunities that honor youth hair culture. DPS students will premiere the first wave of their Black and Belonging mini-documentary on Beautiful Black Hair, followed by a panel discussion and activities that invite attendees of all hair textures to deepen their connection with their hair. This week/initiative was created to elevate the national CROWN Act, ensuring that there is protection against discrimination that is based on race-based hairstyles in schools and the workplace. DPS C.R.O.W.N. Week focuses on providing opportunities for learning and engagement, centering the role and impact of the C.R.O.W.N. Act in the Durham community while illuminating, affirming and amplifying the diversity of voices and experiences in our community. **Doors open at 5:30--Come check out our community vendors
