The Story of Carter
Lil Wayne, legally known as Dwayne Michael Carter Jr., is a New Orleans native who fully dedicated to his music at the age of 14. In order to do so, he dropped out of McMain Magnet School and became a prominent member of the Hot Boys band. In 2004, he released his first album from the Carter series, Tha Carter, and he rapidly gained attention from fans across the country. The album sold 878,000 copies in the United States alone while its lead single, Go DJ, landed him on the list of top five R&B/Hip-Hop hits. Wayne further capitalized on his success by pairing up with another thriving rapper, T.I., and released a single called Soldier that peaked at the No. 3 spot on the Billboard Hot 100. Wayne then put out four more Carter-style albums over 13 years and introduced another theme-based project called I Am Not a Human Being. Besides selling tens of millions of records and earning countless platinum certifications, Lil Wayne helped to establish the careers of artists like Drake and Nicki Minaj, who both began rapping after being signed to Wayne's Young Money Entertainment recording label.
