According to the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) estimates, the eastern monarch population in the U.S. has declined by anywhere from 22% to 72% over the past decade, with the western U.S. monarch population declining by anywhere from 66% to 91%. Habitat loss, climate change, pesticides and disease were cited as some of the major factors in the species’ decline. Our Garden Club has dedicated the month of March to learning more about the Monarch and what we as a club and community can do to help preserve this endangered and important pollinator. We are beginning the month with a presentation by Ms. Susie Vanderlip. Susie is the Monarch Conservation Specialist in southern California for Monarch Watch, a contributing “Champ” to Western Monarch Advocates, a Monarch Butterfly Citizen Scientist, and Administrator for the Facebook Group “Monarch Butterfly Guardians – southern California”. She actively educates and speaks, raises, photographs and writes about Monarch Butterflies. She has authored the children’s photo storybook and produced the 10-minute movie/DVD The Story of Chester, the Monarch Caterpillar/Larva about monarch butterfly life cycle. Our next event will be March 22nd (and possibly Saturday, March 25th) when we will have a monarch education kiosk at the Secret Garden and offer milkweed plants to Club members and the community so that everyone has an opportunity to be part of this restorative habitat project and save the Monarchs!More information on the milkweed project will be available soon.Cost
