REPARATIONS: REPAIRING BLACK-AKRON

The Freedom BLOC believes in order for Black people to truly heal in this country and particularly in Akron that repair must happen. That repair must happen in the form of reparations. From the fact that Summit County was the home to the second largest KKK membership that eventually infiltrated the Akron School Board and Akron Police Department, to the 1968 riots and the decimation of Black communities and homeowners with the construction of the Innerbelt to the Elevate Akron Report that says: “Black Akronite have been intentionally left out of economic opportunity”, Akron must pay for the harm that we see in the streets today that stem from past indiscretions. This opening reparations event will educate Akron residents on the different forms of reparations being discussed nationally while vowing to work together on various reparations programs that uplift Black Akronites. We will form research teams for various theories of change and begin to formulate a campaign and present our findings at The Freedom BLOC’s Black Convention: Week of Resistance, in August.
