Description
Sand tray therapy, an expressive approach to therapy, utilizes miniature figures to build scenes and stories within a sand-filled tray. Developed by Dora Kalff and Margaret Lowenfeld, the style of therapy incorporates a wide range of techniques from a variety of therapeutic methods. Whether directive or nondirective, verbal or nonverbal, sand tray therapy allows children to express their understanding of themselves and the world around them. In this engaging hands-on workshop, we explore applying Adlerian play therapy concepts to the therapeutic sand tray process. We review each of the four (4) phases of Adlerian play therapy and consider directive approaches to sand tray therapy for each phase: (1) building an equalitarian relationship, (2) exploring lifestyle, (3) helping child gain insight, and (4) reeducation and reorientation. As part of the workshop, we consider sand tray options for working with parents and teachers. Participants will have the opportunity to create their own sand tray and conceptualize the creation through an Adlerian play therapy lens.
