SCRAP PDX Presents: Black History Month "Story Quilt" Collage Crafternoon!
Other
1736 Southwest Alder Street,Portland OR 97205
26 February, 2023
Description
As Black History Month 2023 comes to a close, this Sunday, we'll be using fabric, magazine cuttings, photos, and other reused materials to explore identity, memory, and history though collage and to celebrate Black art and history. These collages draw their inspiration from the work of Harlem-born artist and activist Faith Ringgold (1930–), whose incredible narrative quilts combine techniques of sewing, painting, and written word to tell stories of Black life in America and to scrutinize the American artistic traditions that have historically and presently excluded Black people. As we collage our own stories, we will engage with these themes in Ringgold's art and celebrate the countless noteworthy contributions of the Black artists who inspire us in our daily lives. Scroll to see a few examples of Ringgold's quilts! To reserve your spot/seats in before the event, tickets can be purchased in advance through Eventbrite for a slight discount ($7.50 plus fees). SCRAP prioritizes access to affordable art materials and expressions, so if the ticket price poses a hardship, please donate whatever you can through the donation ticket type on Eventbrite. You can also purchase tickets (or donate what you can) in the store on the day of the event; capacity limits of our space (25) might mean that you will not be guaranteed a seat/spot, though we will always do our best to try to find you a seat, if possible. Please feel free to call the store (503-294-0769) on the day of the event if you have any questions. All event ticket sales are final and non-refundable. If you cannot make it to the event, please feel free to send a friend in your place. If you are unable to do that, we still cannot refund your ticket, but you could think of your payment as supporting our SCRAPpy little creative reuse non-profit! We appreciate your support and understanding!
