Description
We are calling this moths wine club tasting "Winter Warm-up", the idea of having good wines in celebration of coming out of winter weather and into spring, but the real common theme here is organic, natural, small production, from winemakers with great stories and a passion for what they are doing, with full-bodied, rustic wines from around the globe. Wine list: Sorelle Bronca - Prosecco di Valdobbiadene Extra Dry 100% Glera. 91 points - Vinous. Tasting notes: crushed yellow apples with savory herbs and white smoke, candied ginger. This wine is named after and produced by the Bronca sisters: Ersiliana and Antonella who inherited their vineyard from their father, who did the same from his father. The Bronca sisters are passionate about making quality wine, but also about organic farming. For them, their work as vignerons is not just winemaking but research, study and experimentation to find the full potential of natural winemaking. The Bronca sisters grow their own fruit on steep hillside vineyards, then make base wine and perform the secondary (sparkling) fermentation on non-vintage batches three or four times a year to ensure freshness. Low yields and hillside-grown fruit ensure that the wine has good concentration and acidity. This one's a clean, crisp and utterly refreshing sparkler that is one of our favorites. Olivier Morin Chitry 'Constance' A truly amazing white Burgundy chardonnay for the price. From a small appellation, Chitry, Olivier works with his wife Nelly and a few others to bring Chitry into the spotlight. Part of what makes this wine so great for the price is that it essentially shares terroir with Chablis. As the story goes, in the middle ages, Chitry was famous for growing cherries, which sold more than grapes. Chablis, unfortunately, was 'stuck' growing table grapes. As time progressed Chablis became known for its wine and longer vinicultural history, while the (in my opinion) better wines from Chitry remained unknown. This has a sharp minerality, but a much more rounder mouthfeel with toasty notes of baked almonds and roasted yellow apples that is simply decadent. Tenute Dettori - Renosu Rosso 100% cannonau from the Badde Nigolosu sub-region of Sardinia. Cannonau is the local name for grenache grown in Sardenia. This is an affordable option for this style. When grown in Sardenia, this wine is much more rustic, ferrous and leathery than spanish or Californian Grenache, while still retaining its bright, fruity, and ripe red berry notes. This wine would be fun to compare against domestic grenache or pinot noir and it also pairs great with chocolate. Bloodroot Pinot Noir, Sonoma County 100% pinot noir sourced from organic vineyards across Sonoma County. This wine has a great story as well: it is a secret collaboration of unknown winemakers who have each scored 95+ points for their own labels. Their goal was to see if their names sell wine, or is it truly the quality of wine they produce. And bloodroot has earned 93/94 point scores in its own right. Very old-world in style, notes of earth, spice and dark fruit. Anthill Farms - Peter's Vineyard Syrah For the last wine we have an amazing single-vineyard Syrah from the North Coast of California. A great wine to warm up with in the winter. Anthill Farms was started by two eager vintners who used to work for Williams Selyem, one of the top pinot noir and syrah producers in the USA. The Anthill farms, like Bloodroot, is clean, straightforward syrah that takes inspiration from the north of the Rhone Valley. There is a tiny bit of viognier in the blend that, with time in the glass, adds notes of peach and white pepper to the blue fruit, green peppercorn and violet flower notes of the syrah.
