11:00am-12:00pm - Visitor Center Show & Tell 12:00pm-12:30pm - Envision the 1846 Walden ice harvest on a walk to Main Beach On Saturday, February 20, 2023: Join ice expert Dennis Picard at the Walden Pond Visitor Center in Concord, MA as he demonstrates and discusses the techniques and tools used to harvest ice from New England lakes and ponds in the 19th century to preserve food before modern refrigeration. Walden water went abroad when a company owned by the "Ice King," Frederick Tudor, cut huge blocks out of Walden Pond. These blocks were stacked along the tracks on the pond's western edge, transported to seaports by rail and shipped around the globe.
