Description

Lake County Search and Rescue Training is hosting the Illinois Search and Rescue 8-hour Basic Navigation certificated class. The Basic Land Navigation course is one of the basic training courses for personnel who have responsibilities to respond to a SAR incident as a field searcher. This course provides a broad overview of land navigation, use of compass (different types), pacing and distance determination and very basic topographic map information. This course is intended for all emergency responders, including police, fire, emergency management, and parks & recreation personnel, who might be involved in a search incident during the normal course of their duties. Prior SAR training or experience is not required to successfully complete this course; however, it will be required for all participants to have taken ICS-100 and ICS-700 as a prerequisite. This course also will be required prior to participants attending the Illinois Search and Rescue Ground Search and Rescue (GSAR) certificated class. Searching is a strenuous activity and are often in remote and unfamiliar places. Ensuring the searchers know how to navigate to and through search segments is critical to the team's safety and success. This class has an indoor and outdoor component. We will be outdoors no matter the weather (there are a few exceptions) - so prepare for the environment! We search like we train, and train like we search - so bring your search gear. You must have a compass for this class. If you do not have one, I would recommend purchasing a Cammenga Lensatic or a Mirrored Orienteering Compass (available on the internet for around $100 or less). This training is open to individuals who are at least 21 years old and must be affiliated with an Agency. CERT personnel are welcome. The Emergency Operations Center is located in the Lake County Government Complex east of the Sheriff's Office. You enter the complex off Winchester Road.
