On Wednesday February 22nd (4-7pm) we will be joined by Javier Bayona, owner of Bodega Familia Chavarri. It is the oldest winery in Rioja Alavesa founded in 1882. From its very beginnings, the Chávarri family has always been involved with the land and wine. Four generations of winegrowers have loved and respected the land of their ancestors. Join us to taste 6 wines from different regions of Spain: Rias Baixas, Rioja and Ribera del Duero. The star of the evening will be Izarbe Rioja Grand Reserva ($59 retail value). Wine Selection: Lagar De Indra Albarino, Rias Baixas, Spain $22 Aromas of lime and pine give way to a tangy, angular palate. Dry apricot and citrus flavors are lively but very familiar for this variety. Larchago White Rioja, Rioja, Spain $19 Aromas of pears, tropical fruits, peaches combined with white flowers. Silky mouth, soft and fresh, very harmonic with long fruity aftertaste. Bodegas Familia Chavarri Valle de Orón, Ribera del Duero, Spain $20 Aromas of strawberries, blackberries and spice. Additional notes of black liquorice. Round in the mouth, with tannins that give it structure and strength. A big, silky wine with a long aftertaste. Larchago Rioja Crianza, Rioja, Spain $22 This is an expressive wine, very tasty and full of flavors of ripe berry and plum and spices. Very harmonious palate with elegant and sweet tannins. Larchago Rioja Reserva, Rioja, Spain $28 Expressive aromas of cherry, dark berries and spicy oak, along with hints of vanilla and pipe tobacco. Broad and fleshy in the mouth, offering cherry-vanilla and licorice flavors that tighten up on the back half. Finishes with building sweetness, a hint of smoky minerals and smooth, late-arriving tannins. Izarbe Grand Reserva, Rioja, Spain $59 Intense primary aromas, fresh and harmonious combined notes from oak ageing. Outstanding aromas of candied red fruit and spices underscored by mineral notes. Sweet, ripe tannins in the mouth. Elegant, balanced mouth. Harmonious, pleasant, long aftertaste.
