We know that by third grade, reading proficiency shifts from "learning to read" to "reading to learn." If children cannot read proficiently in third grade, they fall behind. In Spartanburg County, only 50% of third graders are testing at or above grade reading level. And in Cherokee County, that number drops to 44%. That's why early reading, literacy, and access to books are crucial for children across our community!
