Dr. Crystal Y. Groves Lumpkins and her father, Rev. Israel Boyd S. Groves Jr. released their first historical fiction novel, Ezra-Hobo Jungle King, Riding the Rails to Freedom, Part 1. The self-published novel is the first of three and was released in January of 2023. The series is loosely based on the life of Rev. Boyd S. Groves Sr. (1919-2011), life-long resident of Kansas City, Missouri and father, and grandfather of the co-authors. The writing team will share their writing journey and engage the audience with a discussion about racism, sexism and colorism in the 1930s. The father-daughter team, both former journalists, began writing this story nearly seven years ago after reflecting on Rev. Groves Sr.’s life and the many colorful stories he told. During a time where discrimination, sexism and racism shaped society, the project focus was to tell a story that captured an authentic journey of a young black boy who is discovering the world around him and his own identity.
