Description

Cancer affects us all, but why are some more susceptible and likely to have worse outcomes after a cancer diagnosis? Renowned geneticist and cancer biologist John Carpten studies the genetic changes linked to cancer and why specific populations, defined by race, ethnicity, gender, income, age, and other characteristics, are at a higher risk. Dr. Carpten's talk, "Closing the Gaps to Achieve Cancer Health Equity," will highlight the importance of understanding how social, economic, and environmental disparities across these populations are essential to improving cancer outcomes and how we, as a community, can help spread awareness to benefit patients. Dr. Carpten is a Professor and Chair of Translational Genomics at the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine and serves as Director for the Institute of Translational Genomics. He is the first African American to Chair the National Cancer Advisory Board. A major focus of Dr. Carpten’s research has been the study of prostate cancer, which disproportionately affects non-Hispanic African American men. He led the first study to find genes that heighten the risk of prostate cancer in African Americans. Please join the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory's Cancer Center in welcoming Dr. John Carpten on the evening of Thursday, March 2 at 6:30 p.m. to hear more. Reception with wine and cheese to follow. Roy J. Zuckerberg Lecture.
